The origins of the Town of A Pontenova are from the mining which was carried out at the beginning of the last century.
The area which is now the urban centre of A Pontenova, was originally divided into two different municipalities, the one of Vilaoudriz and the other Vilameá, separated by the Eo river. On the right bank of the river, was the town of Vilaoudriz, were the iron ore mines were located and on its left bank the town of Vilameá, where the miners and their families lived .
The construction of a train station in Vilaoudriz changed the use of iron ore railway, to that of passenger transport service, expanding the commercial, social and cultural activity of the area eventually leading to the merger of Vilaoudriz and Vilameá into the town of A Pontenova.
