In 1986 a National Sports Contest competition by the National Fishing Federation was declared as a national sport and in 1999 as a Tourist Attraction in Galicia. It has been celebrated every 1st of May since 1978, making “festa da troita” the second oldest in Galicia.
The festivity is centred around the Eo river where recreational competitions such as spear, salmon and fly fishing attract the best fishermen from many Provinces throughout the country.
It is a colourful musical, firework show that is held on the first Sunday in October coinciding with Pontenova’s Patron Saint Day Festivities. It is also the day of the local market in the town.
One of the most anticipated recreational activities in the summer season is THE BAIXEO.
Under the motto "Baixa como poidas" (GO DOWN ANY WAY YOU CAN), during this leisure day, people descent a section of the Eo river in boats, or all kinds of floating gadgets, in many cases made by the participants. It is a non-competitive activity that takes place in a magnificent friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.
Once they arrive at the finish line, located in the recreational area of Pozo da Ola, the tasting of a typical and very characteristic dessert called Gran Faragull-Eo is waiting for everyone, including those who do not participate in the descent of the river. This dessert is made by mixing water, milk, wheat flour (can also be corn flour), eggs and salt. This dough is fried in an iron pan shredding it with a spatula or slotted spoon, so that it is cut into very small pieces. This is usually accompanied by torreznos (Fried pork skin) and chorizos, milk, honey, sugar, etc..., according to taste.
Another unavoidable event in A Pontenova, during the month of December, is the “Festival das Minas” which each year attracts a large audience that comes looking for music and fun.
The Galician Mountain Championship is held by the Galician Automobile Federation (FGA), where a points scoring competition is held based on parameters linked to the documentation management, organisation, career development, awards, classifications, itineraries, etc... is considered one of the best hill climbs in the championship.
This is an annual event during the days of the Spanish Constitution Bank Holiday. A large number of antique dealers, numerous artisans and public gather each year having travelled from many points throughout the peninsula.
Admission is free during the days of this fair where the antique dealers show us their best pieces. In addition to antiques, various handicrafts are demonstrated in live workshops including clog making, wicker basketry, decorative painting, iron forging, leathercrafts, jewellery, etc.
